Curbed Cup 1st Round: (4) South End vs. (13) Newton

The Curbed Boston Cup, our (first) annual award to the Hub neighborhood of the year, is kicking off with 16 'hoods vying for the prestigious fake trophy. This week we'll have two match-ups per day, and all the results and the full tourney bracket will be reviewed on Friday. Voting for each pairing ends in the wee hours the next morning. And, now, more eliminations!

The South End has quietly hosted 21 percent of Boston's luxury condo sales so far in 2011, and one-fifth of its total dollar volume in condo sales (that's $335,657,526). Perhaps that's why, when we named it earlier this month one of Boston's Top 5 Starter Neighborhoods for first-time homebuyers, you let fly in our inbox.

Newton is one of America's safest cities, has one of the Hub's healthiest housing markets and has a mayor who's dreaming very big in terms of new construction. It's also got a Wegmans coming. Wegmans, people. Wegmans. The grocer who made Northborough go gaga in October plans to open in Newton's Chestnut Hill Square in late 2013.
