Last week, we labeled 2011 as the Year of the Shovel for Greater Boston, as projects from the banks of the Mystic to Kendall Square to the lapping shores of East Boston got under way or were announced. The Boston Redevelopment Authority has released their own hard numbers: "$2.4 billion was invested in new development; 6,000+ construction jobs were created; 4.9M square feet is under construction; in the last quarter of 2011, construction began on 1,000 units of housing for the first time since 2006!"
