The Otis Place Six-Story Crying Out for a Simplifying Touch

This crazy plush townhouse in Beacon Hill hit the sales market 10 days ago for $5,800,000. It's got four bedrooms (at least); six bathrooms (all marble); and two powder rooms (each marble)—all spread over 5,100 renovated square feet, with a deeded parking space out front and a 1,100-square-foot garden in the back. But what really struck us were the somewhat baroque interiors, self-conscious throwbacks, it seems, to an era when decorating meant "putting a lot of stuff on the walls and in the room." Perhaps a new owner will go for a sleeker look that more accentuates some of the late-19th-century details. The townhouse last sold in August 2007 for an even $5M.
