Stand back on Stuart Street! The 404-unit 45 Stuart Street, O.K.'d by the city last fall, is expected to now break ground before the end of 2012. The $125 million project joins others in the borderlands of Chinatown, the Theater District and Downtown Crossing, including the under-construction Kensington, with its rooftop pool, and the completed W. The developer of 45 Stuart, AvalonBay, compared its transformative nature for the immediate area to what the W did for the 100 block of Stuart Street, where "there was lot of drug stuff going on." (AvalonBay is also building the 187-unit 77 Exeter Street behind Lord & Taylor—time to update our Rental Heatmap!).
The 29-story 45 Stuart will be sheathed in glass for its first five floors, and will have 198 parking spaces, about half of them open to the public, all in a parking garage that will feature not only valet service but car elevators as well. And! The tower will cantilever over the Jacob Wirth Restaurant. Have some brave, new Boston with your sauerkraut.
