Whale of a Price-Chop at South End's 17 Union Park

The 5,800-square-foot, antebellum townhouse at 17 Union Park hit the market in mid-December for $5,250,000. It was an affirmation of all that is aspirational about the South End, from its sauna to its wine seller to that hefty price-tag. Beacon Hill and Back Bay the neighborhood may not be, but give it time, give it time. (The new listing, in fact, was the priciest Boston one in the preceding four weeks not in Back Bay or Beacon Hill.)

The 5-BR, 4.5-BA townhouse can, as of Saturday, claim one of 2013's biggest, Back Bay-like price-chops, too: $300,000, down to $4,950,000 (the spread last traded in July 1998 for $1,090,000). Whales make the biggest splashes.
