Today's the official groundbreaking for a big, new tower at Cambridge's NorthPoint.
The 20-story tower with 355 luxury apartments is part of a much wider project that will encompass the largest slice of land left for development in Cambridge. Planned by a partnership that includes Magic Johnson's development firm and HYM, the concern behind the Waterside Place apartment tower in the Seaport District, NorthPoint is expected to grow to 5 million square feet of residential, office and retail over 45 acres.
This tower, moreover, will feature a 17,000-square-foot, elevated park and a staircase providing pedestrian access between the Gilmore Bridge, which runs to the Orange Line stop in Charlestown, and the tower about two stories below. All total residential-wise, NorthPoint is expected to birth 2,900 housing units. It's a start.
