Southie's D Street Getting Busier w/ New Outdoor Space

South Boston's game-change-y D Street is getting a temporary outdoor space for art installations, pop-up restaurants and (naturally) Major League Bocce. Dubbed the D Street Laboratory, it's all part of the mild renaissance under way along the corridor connecting the busy, busy Southie waterfront with the not-as-busy-yet interior of the neighborhood.

Under a $1.1 million plan from the state's convention center authority, the lab will open by early August on about 2 acres across from the forthcoming Aloft and Element hotels on D Street. It will be connected walking-wise to both of those as well as to the convention center and the street itself. The lab will stay open for a year and a half, maybe two years; and perhaps become permanent thereafter. Stay tuned.
