The 4,765-square-foot, 10-room townhouse at 279 Marlborough Street in Back Bay had last traded in August 1995 for a mere $1,250,000 when it hit the sales market Nov. 9. The Victorian brownstone with four bedrooms and five bathrooms (three full) as well as a sauna, a courtyard and two garaged parking spaces was asking a cool $6,900,000 this go-round. Hopelessly enough, that ginormous tag did not put it anywhere near the priciest properties on the Boston block at the time. Still, almost $7M was enough for notice to be paid and enough to expect a drawn-out sales process. The townhouse actually went to contract fairly quickly and a deal for it closed Dec. 3. This thunderously fast sale came, we think, due to a stonking price-chop: 279 Marlborough went in the end for $6,350,000. That's a full $550,000 off for those playing along at home.
