The Cambridge Redevelopment Authority has put out the bat signal for development suggestions for the 76,000-square-foot Foundry Works Building at 101 Rogers Street in the busy, busy Kendall Square area.
Residential re-use is out, so Cambridge does not want to hear from developers seeking to spin the long-vacant building dating from 1890 into apartments or condos. The city instead wants public uses, especially on the ground floor, the kind that will draw foot traffic. To that end, CRA officials are suggesting a kind of innovation center for the arts, technology, etc. It will cost an estimated $12 million just to build out the former foundry's shell, so deep-pocketed developers only for this one. Stay tuned.
