More Change for Kendall? Pitch to Upzone Area for Apts.

New, 9 comments

No sooner has M.I.T. gotten under way with its six-building development in Kendall Square then comes word of another major plan percolating for the area.

Developer Boston Properties wants to plunk 600,000 square feet of office space and 400,000 square feet of apartments north of Broadway near where Binney Street curves into Galileo Galilei Way. The Biz Journal's Catherine Carlock reports that the firm is working with Cambridge officials to change the zoning to allow for the new development on what are now city-owned parcels. "The 1 million square feet of development would occur as largely infill development and redevelopment of sites that currently have smaller buildings on them," a city official told Carlock. Emphasis ours. Upzoning time? Perhaps not to 1,000 feet. But definitely toward taller and denser. Stay tuned.
