Green Line derailments probably help explain delays

MBTA vows fixes, including slowing down drivers

This might help explain all those delays along the Green Line: It had more derailments than any other light rail line in the nation in 2015—seven total—and has had five so far this year.

Three factors have contributed to the spate of derailments, according to the Globe’s Nicole Dungca. The MBTA has not adequately maintained the Green Line’s tracks nor the wheels on certain cars prone to derailment. Also, simply put, a lot of people ride the Green Line every day—more than any other light rail route nationally. And the MBTA has cited speeding drivers as a possible culprit.

The agency is vowing to crack down on such speeding through its GPS system and will also up the maintenance of tracks and cars. Stay tuned and hold on.
