Boston snow-shoveling fines could increase dramatically for larger commercial owners

Not so much smaller landlords

Legislation is pending that would up the maximum fine from $300 to $1,500 for larger commercial landlords in Boston who do not shovel the sidewalks in front of their properties. All that’s needed is Gov. Charlie Baker’s signature.

Curiously, the law would not apply “to owners of buildings containing six or fewer residential unit.” So, triple-decker landlords, you’re in the clear regardless.

The legislation would also fine those who dump their shoveled snow on a public way.

Mayor Marty Walsh backs the measures, though it’s not certain Baker will apply his John Hancock. Stay tuned.
