Tremont Crossing's Second Act: the Latest Details on Roxbury's Biggest Would-Be Development

A second apartment tower replaces 850 dorms

There is a fresh proposal out for what would be the biggest new development in Roxbury. The plans add roughly 350,000 square feet to the 7.5-acre Tremont Crossing project at Whittier and Tremont streets. And! It gets rid of a student-housing component in favor of another apartment building (plenty of dorms are going up in Boston anyway).

Feldco Development Corp.'s plans now call for nearly 2,000,000 square feet across three city blocks, per Catherine Carlock at the Boston Business Journal. Within that footprint would be two apartment towers, one 26 stories and the other 31 stories; a 12-story office building; a 200-room hotel; a museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists; and a smorgasbord of retail, including a BJ’s Wholesale Club and a CVS (and maybe a Planet Fitness).

All totaled, including 1,587 parking spaces, we're talking roughly 1,950,000 square feet of space. The city is mulling Feldco's plans right now, and it could be ages before construction starts on Tremont Crossing. The last set of plans, which included 850 student-housing units, dated from early 2012. Stay tuned.
