The Boston Preservation Alliance has launched an online petition to save one of Boston’s more iconic signs: the Citgo lantern in Kenmore Square. Boston University earlier this year hired a brokerage to sell a collection of its buildings in the area, including 660 Beacon Street, from atop which the Citgo sign has loomed since 1965.
The sign and its building are not landmarked, and BU has said there is nothing stopping a new owner from removing the sign, though the school told the Globe’s Tim Logan it would expect it to stay put (if for no other reason than its prominence likely boosts nearby property values).
The preservation alliance is not taking any chances. It plans to present its online petition, which it launched on June 23, to the Boston Landmarks Commission at its next meeting on July 12. Stay tuned.
