Somerville plastic bag ban set to join one in Cambridge

Newton and Brookline, too

Another sizable slice of Greater Boston is set to ban single-use plastic bags at retailers: Somerville’s prohibition takes effect Sept. 1 for businesses of at least 10,000 square feet and Dec. 1 for smaller outlets.

The ban joins similar ones already in effect in Newton, Brookline, and Cambridge, though in the latter patrons can pay 10 cents for a bag (or get one free so long it doesn’t have handles—loophole!). Watertown’s plastic bag ban takes effect in 2017.

Next year could also see a bag ban blanket the entire state. Stay tuned.
