Quincy’s Looking Mighty Fine as West of Chestnut Hits 50% Mark

A major milestone has been reached, with half of the building’s units reaching pre-leasing.

In case you haven’t heard, luxury rentals are all the rage, and Quincy Center’s Hancock District got its latest offering to add to Boston’s cadre of buildings. West of Chestnut is the latest, opening tomorrow, September 1, continuing momentum to Quincy’s revitalization that’s stopped and started throughout the years.

Indoor amenities, which are increasingly becoming expected, include a club suite with a lounge and media room, dog-wash room, cross-training studio, and outdoor kitchen with fireplace and courtyard. Outside the building, an also good-idea-but-also-expected mix of retail/office/restaurant/residential include Japanese fusion restaurant Fuji, KKatie’s Burger Bar, OrangeTheory Fitness studio, an as yet to be identified cafe, and easy access to the Red Line all add up to premium rent.

The $60 million development known as West of Chestnut has 58% of its 169 luxury rentals spoken for. Residents of the studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units will begin moving into the newly completed second building tomorrow, September 1.

Rents start at $1825 for a studio and up to $2850 for a two-bedroom. For people who comparison shop, that’s not too bad when you start to consider other residential luxury properties, like The Kensington in Chinatown/Downtown Crossing/the Theatre District, where rents start at the $3550 for a studio. While West of Chestnut certainly may not be as central, it does have a certain quality of life that should buoy the attractiveness of the neighborhood to those who may not have considered Quincy before.

Others who are looking to switch into the high rise life are certainly taking notice. According to the Herald, West of Chestnut property manager Sam Diss reported that their renters include a number of people “from triple deckers in South Boston and from older apartments on Beacon Hill.”

Local developer Gate Residential, who focuses on urban residential projects, partnered up on this project. In this case, it was with Quincy Mutual Fire Insurance Company, who has been in Quincy since 1851 as a major investor in other projects like the upcoming remodel of City Hall, the renovated Quincy Center T station, and the Adams Green urban park.
