The Watertown Planning Board voted unanimously this week to approve the more than 1 million-square-foot redevelopment and expansion of the Arsenal Mall site.

The O.K. clears the way for one of the Boston region’s biggest developments to start construction this year. And that is exactly what developers Boylston Properties and the Wilder Companies intend to do: The pair in a press release Jan. 12 announced that construction would start in six to eight months.

The project, dubbed Arsenal Yards, will include 350,000 square feet of retail and entertainment, including a 30,000-square-foot specialty grocery store. It will also include 428 market-rate apartments and 75 affordable ones.

Prellwitz Chilinski Associates is handling the design and the planning for the project, which is supposed to open in late 2018.
