President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that threatens to strip millions of dollars in funding from cities that give sanctuary to undocumented immigrants.
Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville are among several hundred municipalities and states nationwide that do so to some degree. Specifically, the three cities will not detain immigrants on behalf of federal immigration officials unless the immigrants have a pending criminal warrant issued for them (more here and here).
How Trump’s order actually affects Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville remains to be seen. That is, what the feds might cut in retaliation is not yet clear.
What is clear is that the cities—and the region as a whole—rely on the feds for plenty. Things, then, could get very contentious very fast.
Stay tuned.
