Boston-area apartment rents down from 2016

Region still nation’s third-priciest

The median rent for a 1-BR apartment in Greater Boston is down 5.9 percent, to $2,250, compared with the start of January 2016, according to real estate listings site Zumper.

The site tracks vacant and available apartments, so it’s a pretty good barometer of where the rental market stands as the month—and the year—begin.

The median rent for a 2-BR is down 2.3 percent, to $2,600, compared with this time last year. See below for how the Boston region stacks up against other major markets.

Despite the year-over-year declines, we’re still the third most expensive. Happy new year.
