Eight MBTA vehicles, including six Green Line trolleys, derailed in 2016, according to new federal statistics—the most of any light-rail system in the United States for the second year in a row.
No one was injured in the 2016 incidents, which included the derailment of two subway maintenance vehicles. But they certainly added to the T’s already chronic delays. (Important note: The statistics do not cover commuter rail incidents, which a different federal agency tracks.)
MBTA officials stressed to the Globe’s Nicole Dungca that the T remains safe. And, besides, last year’s number pales against statistics from years gone by: In 2007, 29 Green Line trolleys alone jumped the tracks.
