Boston’s noisiest areas: Federal data pinpoints loudest spots

Quieter farther west

The U.S. Transportation Department’s statistical gurus have for the first time ever mapped aircraft and road noise data for the entire nation. Above is the portion for the Boston area.

The darker the area, the noisier it is. Hence, the positively incandescent area around Logan Airport appears to be the noisiest in the region.

In general and perhaps not surprisingly, central business districts and main roadways are loudest. You find more quietude in the leafier western suburbs. You can play around with the DOT’s interactive map through here.
