Right next to the Orange Line

We’ve known for a few months that Somerville’s Assembly Row was expanding by several hundred housing units and tens of thousands of square feet of restaurant and retail space.

Now comes word of developer Federal Realty’s filing of plans with the city for a 500-unit residential complex with 26,500 square feet of restaurant and retail space on Assembly Row’s so-called Block 8.

The site is near the Assembly Square Orange Line stop as well as between the under-construction Montaje, a 447-unit apartment building set to open this year, and a recently wrapped office and retail development.

Bells and whistles at the proposed project would include a third-floor courtyard with a pool as well as private patios off some residences. A mammoth parking garage—500 spaces—would also be included, despite the complex’s Orange Line proximity.

The City of Somerville is mulling the proposal. Stay tuned.
