Memorial Day weekend: Here are the worst times to leave Boston

Consider leaving ASAP

If you can swing it, leave the Boston area for Memorial Day weekend before 1 p..m. Friday. After that, according to MassDOT, congestion is expected to spike and to continue through 7 p.m.

As for when to return to the area, try after 7 p.m. on Monday (again, if you can swing it—that is a little late in the day). Holiday-related congestion is expected to ebb, with traffic returning to its normal awfulness.

Also, MassDOT is doing its part by suspending roadwork statewide at noon on Friday.

And, of course, there is always commuter rail out of South and North stations, if you’re not going too far and don’t want to drive; and Amtrak out of Back Bay, Route 128, and South Station if you’re going a bit farther than that and also don’t want to drive.

As for Logan, passengers can track their departing flights here. Things appear to be running smoothly, despite the rain.
