The lease-holder for Faneuil Hall Marketplace wants to install seamless glass canopies along the sides of the Quincy Market building.
Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp.’s installation would allow it to extend the outdoor-seating season at the city-owned tourist destination.
Not only would the canopies provide cover, but they would provide a degree of warmth, too: In addition to overhead heaters in the canopies, a special glaze on the glass would melt snow on contact and prevent condensation at the same time (leave it to the Scandinavians).
Given the historic nature of the marketplace and the market building, it could be a while before Ashkenazy gets the necessary approvals for the canopies. The first stop is the city’s Landmarks Commission on August 22.
Stay tuned.
