Charlestown’s only post office could shutter as lease ends

Closure would make way for CVS expansion in Bunker Hill Mall

Charlestown’s only post office could shutter because its landlord wants the space so a CVS nextdoor can expand.

The owners of the Bunker Hill Mall plan to terminate the lease on the post office at 23 Austin Street at the end of 2018. It’s unclear right now whether the post office has another space in the geographically isolated neighborhood lined up.

The Postal Service says it’s negotiating for another space in the same mall, which includes a Whole Foods in addition to that CVS. The service has vowed to maintain a retail presence in Charlestown come what may.

“There are several milestone activities to come, including final discussions with our current landlord on alternative space prospects and the scheduling of a public meeting, should we need to explore additional facility opportunities,” a Postal Service spokesman said. “We should know about the need for such a meeting shortly and expect one in September, if necessary.”
