South Boston apartment building would replace parking lot near Broadway T stop

The developers behind a proposal to replace a parking lot at 21-35 West Second Street in South Boston with a six-story, 55-unit apartment building have included a twist that appears to be the first of its kind in Boston.

Peter Spellios and Neal Howard plan to include two cars in two parking spaces on adjoining Athens Street that will be for the use of building tenants only, who will rent them by the hour—kind of like a private Zipcar service.

Otherwise, the development will have no parking spaces. It is, after all, right near the Broadway stop of the Red Line.

The building is also due to include seven units designated as affordable, a shared rooftop deck, and 2,600 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Plans were only recently filed with the city for the more than 10,000-square-foot triangular parcel. Stay tuned.
