Just about anywhere else in the U.S. of A. it would seem absurd to use under $1,000,000 as a starting point for finding a more affordable spot in a particular municipality.

Not in Cambridge, home of the mega-deal(TM). There simply are not that many properties for sale for under $1M. Our latest Curbed Comparisons map here, in fact, contains the bulk of those properties. All are condos and all are on the cheaper side for the People's Republic.
