Around Boston’s Hyde Park, 10 solid options for starter homes right now

The city’s southernmost neighborhood has so many spacious options for first-time buyers, including whole houses and newer condos

View as Map

It can be almost impossible to define a starter home in the Boston area—largely because real estate is so expensive here versus much of the rest of the U.S.—but it is possible to break down what a starter home might be by neighborhood via market data and housing stock.

Take Hyde Park, Boston’s youngest and southernmost neighborhood. Due primarily to its distance from downtown, it boasts some of the most affordable market-rate homes in the city, and a good number of those homes are quite spacious. Indeed, it’s not unusual to find a house in Hyde Park retailing for what a smaller condo would command farther in.

Many, if not most, Hyde Park homes nevertheless fall below the citywide medians as of January 2020 of $625,000 for detached single-families and $705,000 for condos. Here are 10 such homes in different parts of the neighborhood—great options for first-time buyers.
