Mapping the Potential Event Sites of the Boston Olympics

View as Map

Well, golly, it might actually happen: Our fair region could end up hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics. The United States Olympic Committee nominated Boston to represent the United States in the international scramble for the Games. And, while said scramble may not be decided until 2017, we figured it was never too early to commence wildly speculating about where events might be held. Actually, this map of 10 would-be sites is not entirely wild: It comes via suggestions from Boston 2024, a partnership of civic and business leaders pushing the city's bid.

One quick note: The group has suggested that rowing competitions would be on the Merrimack River in Lowell because of the narrowness of some Charles River bridge passages; and Gillette Stadium up in Foxborough might end up hosting something called soccer.

The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center has plenty of room, surely.

Archery

M.I.T.'s Killian Court has a lot of lawn.

Fencing

The event would be held in a building that M.I.T. has yet to construct.

Olympic Marathon

The marathon's route would likely not follow the rather-too-circuitous route of the Boston Marathon. But it would end near the Common.

Beach Volleyball

Psych! Beach volleyball would not be on the beach at all, but on America's oldest public park.

Sailing

Duh. The Charles might also be used.

Equestrian Competitions

The 527-acre Franklin Park should have plenty of room for horses and such.

Pentathlon

The stadium seats 10,000.
